Update: New Mechanic -- Parry / Just Defend
Most of the people who are into fighting games know the legendary "Evo Moment # 37", where Daigo, who was losing against Justin, flips the script and wins by parrying Chun-Li's multi-hit super art and wins with his own combo.
People have been suggesting that I add a stamina meter because sometimes they get spammed jabs and are having a hard time intercepting with a counter jab of their own. With parry, spamming can be prevented. I am honestly hesitant to add another meter, especially after I've already added a guard break meter, as this might overcomplicate the game. I'm still experimenting with a stamina meter, but in the meantime I have decided to add a Parry mechanic, similar to Street Fighter III Third Strike's Parry and Garou MOTW's Just Defend. See it in action below:
If you hit block just before the impact, you parry the attack, get no damage, get some life back (only up to recoverable life meter, if any), AND also reset the three count hit which will make the damage permanent/non-recoverable. It also gives you a small window of opportunity to counter attack, making the enemy think twice before spamming you with attacks and hooks. With parry, the match can take an unexpected turn at any given time without giving notice to the enemy (as opposed to stamina meter which is visible to both parties). Now that's not to say that a stamina bar will no longer be added, I still might, depending on my tests, but at least is already another option to change the momentum of the match and prevent punch spamming.
The question now would be, wouldn't the duck be redundant because of parry? Partially, I suppose, since duck offers fewer advantages. Parry takes some time to get used to, a bit more difficult to pull off, and I still have plans about the duck, having it as a potential modifier to add new moves such as an uppercut. In the meantime, duck and parry are two ways to evade/prevent damage, and I think the more options there are, the merrier.
